Wow, let's talk about the design of my science class. There are so many things that I would love to change.
1) I cannot stand the desks with the chairs attached. You cannot move around or even get comfortable enough to be able to concentrate on what you are doing. You have absolutely no mobility, therefore disabling you to move around if you need any help. I love the rolling chairs we have in our classroom for English. These are so much better and much more comfortable. I cannot tell you how many times I have rolled to another desk instead of having to be trapped inside a desk and having to yell across the room just to ask someone a question.
2) I would also change the way that we are taught. Can we please do something more intelligent that copy things from the board and fill out a worksheet then take that and fill it out based on the notes we just copied? Do they not think that we can handle something more difficult than that? Where are the high expectations? If there is not something expected out of us then how can you expect us to want to do our best. I would rather see the teacher have us learn things and then have us personalize it and design it. Maybe we could create our own solar system models or something like that.
3) I remember that I had a science teacher in eighth grade whose room was so decorated and so fun looking it really actually helped me to be more interested in learning science. I really enjoyed working in this environment. First of all because it seemed as if the teacher cared about science and cared about the subject and loved to teach it and to explore different parts of it. Number two, is that it made me feel more comfortable. I can't stand pure white walls. They drive me crazy but they are all over the place at Arapahoe. I would like to see a greater interest in the design of our school and an expressive environment, I believe, would create a more comfortable learning environment that enhances the learning experience.
4) I would change how you get into honors or nonhonors. First of all, I would expand the amount of students who could enter "honors" classes because I CAN NOT stand the fact that some student are get held back from their full potential and their full education just because the school cannot fit all of the kids "worthy" of honors into the classes. Why not change one of the regular classes into an honors class. That is already another 30 more people. If a child is able to learn beyond what is expected, they should be able to expand their learning free of the limitations of the amount of people admitted. Anyone who desires to have the challenge or needs the challenge should not be held from that because the school has not taken the effort to organize more challenging classes.
